    KH. Ahmad Dahlan is a national hero who has contributed greatly to the Indonesian nation through his progressive movement. He is the founder of an Islamic organization called Muhammadiyah, one of the largest Islam mass organizations in Indonesia.

    Ahmad Dahlan was born in Kauman village, Yogyakarta, under the auspices of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VII on August 1, 1868. His first name is Muhammad Darwis. Some literature mentions that he is a descendant of Ki Ageng Gribig (one of the scholars at the time of Mataram) and Maulana Ibrahim (Sunan Gresik). The genealogy is Maulana Malik Ibrahim, Maulana Ishaq, Maulana 'Ainul Yaqin, Maulana Muhammad Fadlullah (Sunan Prapen), Maulana Sulaiman Ki Ageng Gribig (Djatinom), Demang Djurung Djurus Sapisan, Demang Djurung Djuru Kapindo, Kyai Ilyas, Kyai Murtadla, KH Muhammad Sulaiman , KH Abu Bakar, and Muhammad Darwisy (Ahmad Dahlan).

    Ahmad Dahlan was a student of Kiai Sholeh Darat for two years with K. H. Hasyim Asy'ari, the founder of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). Previously, the two had known each other when they studied at a pesantren in Madura under the tutelage of Kiai Kholil Bangkalan in 1909, Ahmad Dahlan joined the Boedi Oetomo Organization, an organization that gave birth to many nationalist figures that had been established one year earlier. In this organization, he channeled the knowledge he mastered to meet the needs of the members.

    Three years later, on November 18, 1912/8 Dzulhijjah 1330, Ahmad Dahlan founded a religious organization called Muhammadiyah. This organization began to spread to various regions and mostly engaged in education and health.

    In addition, as a form of instilling love for the country to the youth, he also formed the Hizbul Wathan movement. Eleven years after establishing Muhammadiyah, he passed away before the Almighty, on February 23, 1923 to be exact in Yogyakarta. The deceased was buried in the village of Karangkajen, Brontokusuman, Yogyakarta. For his services, the Indonesian government awarded the title of national hero to Ahmad Dahlan in 1961. In addition, his life story was also filmed under the title "The Enlightenment" which was released in 2010.
